Your twenties are all about discovery, adventure, and traveling alone can only heighten your international experiences. It can be scary, though, to go out on a limb and travel to someplace unknown by yourself. However, there are a few things to keep in mind that can make traveling alone much more accessible to those of you who are worried about being independent travelers.

Translation

This is vital to anyone who is travelling somewhere where the main language is not that of their mother tongue. I was fortunate enough to get to travel to Taiwan and Thailand for the month of the May. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life and everybody there was extremely nice and helpful. However, the language barrier between myself and the people there. Google Translate came in handy many times when I needed to ask for directions or ask about a menu option. Definitely download a translation app, such as Google Translate or even DuoLingo (to practice any given language), to help break down that language barrier.

Google Maps and other apps

Evidently, Google Maps can be helpful if you’re lost and in need of directions. It is extremely important to keep in mind thought that app availability across the world is not the same. For instance, Google Maps does not work in certain parts of China. Be careful when choosing your apps so you can make sure that they actually work when you need them.

Currency exchange

It’s always good to have cash on your while you’re travelling because, in some cases, you may be unable to use your credit or debit card. I recommend that you do your exchanges outside of the airport to get the best deals on currency exchange rates. You can find currency exchange offices at the mall. Just make sure you do your research and stay up to date on exchange rate changes.

Be cautious

Traveling alone can worrisome. Make sure you’re always alert to your surroundings. I suggest practicing going out by yourself wherever you are. Maybe start by going on a small road trip alone or just going to dinner by yourself. You’ll have to do these either way when you’re traveling, so it’s good to get used to it so you’re more comfortable going to foreign locations alone.

Going abroad is an unforgettable experience. I definitely recommend going if you have a chance to. Certain places are cheaper and safer than others, so start looking up locations and prices for whenever you’re thinking about traveling. Good luck and safe travels!
